About the 5 minute typing test
The 5 minute typing test is a typing marathon. It measures your sustained speed and accuracy, which is what matters when you type reports, emails or code for hours. You get your WPM, accuracy, raw WPM, consistency score and a graph of your speed over all five minutes.
How the 5 minute typing test works
- The 5 minute timer starts with your first key press.
- Find a rhythm you can keep. Do not sprint at the start.
- When time is up you see your WPM, accuracy, mistakes, consistency and speed graph.
Five minutes tests more than finger speed. Posture, breathing and focus all matter. Many people notice a dip around the middle of the test and a recovery near the end. The speed graph shows exactly where yours happens. If you want a faster standard check, use the 1 minute typing test.

Tips for a better 5 minute score
- Sit upright with your feet flat and your screen at eye level before you begin.
- Take a breath every few lines. Holding your breath tightens your shoulders.
- Aim for steady accuracy. Mistakes you fix cost far more time over five minutes than over thirty seconds.

Frequently asked questions
How many words is a 5 minute typing test?
At 40 WPM you type about 200 words in five minutes, at 60 WPM about 300 words and at 80 WPM about 400 words. The table on this page shows more speeds.
What is a good WPM for a 5 minute test?
Expect it to be slightly lower than your 1 minute speed. 40 WPM is average, 60 WPM is good and 80 WPM or more is fast, as long as your accuracy stays high.
Will I get tired during a 5 minute typing test?
It is normal to feel it in your hands or shoulders, especially if you are new to touch typing. Relax your arms, keep your wrists straight and take short breaks between tests.
What are the Basic, Pro and Advanced levels?
Basic uses short, common lowercase words. Pro uses all common words with capitals and punctuation. Advanced adds long words, numbers and symbols such as $, % and brackets. Higher levels lower your WPM a little, and your best score is saved for each level.
