About the 30 second typing test
A 30 second typing test is the fastest way to check your typing speed. It is short enough to take whenever you have a minute, and it is a good warm-up before a longer test. Your result is shown in words per minute (WPM), with your accuracy, your raw speed and a graph of your speed second by second.
How the 30 second typing test works
- The timer starts when you press your first key, not when the page loads.
- Type the words as shown. Backspace works, but every wrong key still counts against your accuracy.
- When the 30 seconds end, the test stops and your score appears. Download a certificate if you like.
Thirty seconds is a sprint. Your score is usually a little higher than your 1 minute score, because you do not tire and a slow start counts for more. That is fine for a quick check. If you want a number to compare with job requirements or other people, use the 1 minute typing test, which is the usual standard.
Words you type at each speed in 30 second

Tips for a better 30 second score
- Do one practice round first. The first few seconds of a short test are always slower.
- Look one or two words ahead of the word you are typing. It keeps your rhythm even.
- Do not rush a mistake. With only 30 seconds, one corrected word costs less than a streak of wrong keys.

Frequently asked questions
How many words is a good score on a 30 second typing test?
At 40 WPM you type about 20 words in 30 seconds. At 60 WPM it is about 30 words, and at 80 WPM about 40 words. See the table on this page for the full list.
Is a 30 second typing test accurate?
It gives a quick estimate. Because it is short, one slow start or a few mistakes change the result more than in a longer test. Take it two or three times and look at the average, or use the 1 minute test for a steadier number.
Is my 30 second WPM the same as my 1 minute WPM?
Not exactly. Most people score a little higher in 30 seconds, because they do not get tired. Your 1 minute score is the better one to quote.
Can I use this test for a job application?
This is a self-timed practice test, not an official certification. It is good for checking your level. If an employer asks for a certificate, they will tell you which test or provider to use.
