About the 3 minute typing test
The 3 minute typing test shows how well you keep your speed over time. A quick burst of fast typing is easy. Staying accurate and steady for three minutes is closer to real work. You get your WPM, accuracy, raw WPM, consistency score and a speed graph for the whole test.
How the 3 minute typing test works
- The 3 minute timer starts with your first key press.
- Type at a pace you can keep. The graph afterwards shows whether you slowed down.
- At the end you see your WPM, accuracy, mistakes and consistency. Your personal best for this length is saved in your browser.
Most people type a little slower over three minutes than over one, often by 5 to 10 percent, because attention and hands tire. A small drop is normal. A big drop in the speed graph usually means tension in the shoulders or wrists, or typing too hard at the start. Compare it with your 1 minute score to see your endurance.

Tips for a better 3 minute score
- Start at about 90% of your top speed. You can still speed up in the last minute.
- Relax your shoulders and keep your wrists straight. Tension is the main reason speed drops.
- Watch the consistency score. A high score means a steady rhythm, which is usually faster overall.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my 3 minute score lower than my 1 minute score?
Over a longer time your hands and attention tire, and small mistakes add up. A drop of 5 to 10 percent is normal. Practice with longer texts to build endurance.
How many words do I type in 3 minutes?
At 40 WPM about 120 words, at 60 WPM about 180 words and at 80 WPM about 240 words. See the table on this page.
What does the consistency score mean?
It compares how even your typing speed was from second to second. 100% would be perfectly even. A higher score usually goes with fewer mistakes and a better net speed.
Is the 3 minute test good for practice?
Yes. It is a good way to train endurance and rhythm, and it gives you enough keystrokes to find your weak keys. Open the Progress tab afterwards to practice them.
