How to learn touch typing
Rest your fingers on the home row: A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right. Each finger owns a few keys, shown by the colors on the keyboard above. Look at the screen, not at the keys. Go slowly until you reach 90% accuracy, then build speed. The Learn tab adds one row at a time and marks a lesson as done when you pass it. See all 11 lessons.
Typing speed test

Tips to type faster
Practice 10 to 15 minutes every day instead of one long session. Keep your wrists relaxed and your back straight. Do not look at the keyboard. Fix accuracy first, because mistakes slow you down more than careful typing does. Retake the typing test once a week to see your progress. More in our typing speed guide.

Frequently asked questions
How do I learn touch typing?
Start with the home row (A S D F J K L ;), keep your fingers on it, and add one row at a time. Look at the screen, not the keys, and aim for 90% accuracy before you try to go faster. The Learn tab on this page follows exactly that order with 11 lessons.
What is a good typing speed?
The average person types about 40 words per minute. 60 WPM is good for office work and 80 WPM or more is fast. Accuracy matters as much as speed.
How is WPM calculated?
One word is counted as 5 characters. WPM is the number of correctly typed characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes spent typing.
Is this typing test free?
Yes. It is free and needs no signup. Your results are saved only in your own browser.
How long does it take to learn touch typing?
Most beginners can touch type slowly after one to two weeks of 15 minutes a day, and reach 40 WPM within a month or two. Daily short sessions work better than long ones once a week.
